An effective way to improve the strength of concrete pavements that are susceptible to high traffic lots and adverse weather and climatic factors is the use of polymer artificial additives which substantially increase the rheological and physical-mechanical properties of bitumen. The application of thermosetting polymers including epoxy resins for asphalt and bitumen changes is seen as a perspective solution for this issue. Studies have proven high riding qualities of asphalt pavements that contain epoxy resins. When exchanging 20-35% of bitumen with epoxy component, a significant improvement in durability characteristics of asphalt pavement is noted, especially at bent temperatures. Specific feature of epoxy asphalt concrete is its ability to get power over a long-term procedure.

Long life of roads

Thus, despite the increased expense of epoxy concrete, long service life of pavements on the basis ensures an increased productivity of using these materials, especially on the highways with heavy traffic and severe traffic conditions.

Today in Ukraine for example, actual life span of asphalt pavements is 6-12 years rather than the recommended 15-20 years. Premature maintenance and rehabilitation of streets require millions of additional costs that could be given to the structure of new and renovation of existing roads. One of many reasons of rapid destruction of pavements in conditions of heavy traffic is bitumen properties. Of all the street construction materials bitumen is considered the most sensitive to traffic loads and impact of weather and climate factors. Like a thermoplastic material, bitumen is softened at high summer temperatures and it becomes fragile at low temperatures in the wintertime. Along with low adhesion of bitumen with rock materials this brings about the organization of ruts, cracks, potholes and pits on the sidewalk.

Additional properties

Due to the above, a targeted change of bitumen properties is the most effective way to increase efficiency and strength of road pavements. Changes of bitumen and concrete by different artificial additives, particularly by polymers, are widespread. Today, great interest in the use of thermosetting polymers especially epoxies resins as modifiers have shown the countries of Australia, China, USA and Western Europe. Epoxy resins are oligomers containing epoxy groups and can form cross-linked polymers under the hardeners impact.

The most common epoxy resins are products of epichlorohydrin polycondensation with phenols, where with bisphenol A are the most popular. Characteristics can be obtained by combining different resins and hardeners. Today, epoxy resin which properties go beyond other materials properties primarily based on synthetic resins is employed in all branches of industry.


Epoxy glue is considered as the most all-purpose and reliable stuff. Thanks to its durability and good adhesion, this glue bonds equally well both shoes and the parts of the aeroplanes. Epoxy resin can be used as an impregnating material for glass thread and textiles to manufacture glass dietary fiber plastics which are being used in shipbuilding, construction, aircraft structure, manufacturing of the machines parts and others.

Today epoxy resins are being used in road construction for prep of Resin Asphalt mixtures. Diverse types of asphalt made up of epoxy resins are called epoxy asphalt concrete.
